Coins of Syriafrom the French Mandate to the modern Republic

French Mandate coinage (1921–1945) was struck at the Paris and Poissy mints, producing distinctive architectural reverses — the citadel of Aleppo, the colonnade at Palmyra, and the Great Mosque of Damascus — in nickel, bronze, and aluminium-bronze. These remain among the most elegantly designed Arab coins of the 20th century.

Independence in 1946 brought the Syrian pound and a national coinage that evolved through the United Arab Republic period (1958–1961) and into the Ba'ath era, which introduced bimetallic denominations up to 25 pounds. The pre-1960 series remains undervalued internationally, while the commemorative silver and gold issues of the 1950s–70s are genuinely scarce.

Syria's modern coinage began under French Mandate administration in 1921, with denominations in piastres struck at French state mints. After independence (1946), the Syrian Republic adopted the pound (lira) divided into 100 piastres. The brief United Arab Republic union with Egypt (1958–1961) produced its own transitional issues. Ba'ath-era coinage from the 1970s onward shifted to brass and cupro-nickel, and the 1996–2003 series introduced bimetallic 5- and 10-pound coins still circulating today.
