French Mandate coinage (1921–1945) was struck at the Paris and Poissy mints, producing distinctive architectural reverses — the citadel of Aleppo, the colonnade at Palmyra, and the Great Mosque of Damascus — in nickel, bronze, and aluminium-bronze. These remain among the most elegantly designed Arab coins of the 20th century.

Independence in 1946 brought the Syrian pound and a national coinage that evolved through the United Arab Republic period (1958–1961) and into the Ba'ath era, which introduced bimetallic denominations up to 25 pounds. The pre-1960 series remains undervalued internationally, while the commemorative silver and gold issues of the 1950s–70s are genuinely scarce.
